A Journey Beyond the Self
This journey toward understanding freedom involves examining controversial topics that challenge our perspectives and push us to think beyond conventional boundaries.
Ego Death
Freedom can be experienced during the process of awakening when we experience Ego death.
This death can be seen as a transcendental psychological and spiritual experience. The Ego or the sense of self which incorporates your thoughts, behaviour and perception dissolve and transforms into a deep realization that the self is an illusion and that we are not what we thought we were.
We transcend into this realization that we are interconnected with a large universe, understanding this unity and oneness we are not anymore a separate entity with the world around us. In this experience our narrative, self-constructed identity from the memories, beliefs and personality traits fade away, leaving us pure consciousness.
In this moment what dissolves is the illusion of separateness, and we feel deeply interconnected with nature, people and everything we are aware of. You become the more authentic version of yourself, all the masks you have worn and the role you have played, the story you have told and the fear you had, it fail and leaves us with profound insights, love and compassion.
Because of the loss of part of your identity, Ego death can be liberating but as well challenging. It is required to surrender the need to control and trust the natural unfolding of life, trust your guidance and embrace the unknown.
Embracing the Inevitability of Physical Death
"Death is our greatest challenge as well as our greatest spiritual opportunity. By cultivating mindfulness, we can prepare ourselves for this final passage by allowing nature, rather than Ego, to guide us."
- Ram Dass
The ultimate freedom is when we accept death. This topic has been considered taboo for a multitude of people. My aim is to demystify and reframe the concept in a lightweight way. Physical death might evoke fear, discomfort and anxiety, making the most enduring taboos in our society. Even because what Ego fears is the cessation of its own existence. It is natural to fear the unknown and to mourn the loss of those we love. However, by shifting our perspective, we can begin to see death not as something to dread but as a fundamental aspect of existence that offers valuable lessons. My vision and personal experience see death as an inevitable part of human experience, and once it is confronted with curiosity, openness and acceptance can be indeed profoundly liberating, from unconscious fears and mental chains.
Embracing the concept of death and the impermanent nature of all things, we can live more freely and everything we experience in this life such as relationships, possessions and achievements is fleeting. This radical change in perspective can make you realize and inspire you to cherish each moment, giving you a sense of deep gratitude and teaching you to live more fully.
When we accept that everything is temporary and let go of attachments, we can focus on what matters the most, such as living in the present moment, experiencing love, compassion and connection with all the things around us.
Once we start accepting death and not fearing it anymore we might be overwhelmed by a profound sense of peace. Because we confront our deepest fears and we transcend them. This acceptance helps us to appreciate everything as bliss, knowing that our time is limited can be a powerful motivator to live authentically and pursue what brings us joy and fulfilment.
Furthermore, contemplating death can deepen our understanding of consciousness. Many philosophical and spiritual traditions suggest that while our physical bodies are temporary, our consciousness transcends death. This perspective invites us to explore the idea that our true essence is not tied to our physical form but is part of a greater, enduring reality.
Ram Dass said that death is like taking off an old pair of shoes, where finally the spirit can leave this body and come back home. Death is a good reminder for us that we don’t have to fear something normal and that as a spirit we live in consciousness.
This concept gives you the right perspective on life and will let you be grateful for this time on earth. It teaches you to take risks, try new things, change and change again, do only what makes you happy, and be the person you have always dreamt of being.
